Q: What is Microdermabrasion?

A: Microdermabrasion is a procedure that uses a highly controlled stream of fine aluminum oxide crystals. The crystals are sprayed onto the skin under pressure and suctioned up by simultaneous vacuum to remove the very top layer (dead skin cells) of the skin.

On Microdermabrasion treatment can be equal to three 30 percent glycolic treatments (or one 70 percent glycolic). The controlled aspect means the technician can choose the exact area to be treated as well as the depth and duration of treatment.  This Microdermabrasion is ideal for the busy person who wants to improve their appearance but does not have time for more aggressive procedures such as laser resurfacing or deeper chemical peeling. It is an exciting new procedure for improving the appearance of the skin.  Back to top of page.

Q: Why should someone have a Microdermabrasion treatment?

A: Approximately every 28 days, we receive a new layer of skin. As new cells form below the skin surface and mature, pushing their way up to the top, dead cells settle on the surface. This can cause enlarged and clogged pores and a bumpy, uneven texture. As we get older, the natural process of new skin cells replacing older skin cells begins to slow down, leading to the appearance of aged skin. By removing the dead skin cells found in the stratum corneum, fine lines, hyper pigmentation and acne scars can be greatly diminished. Back to top of page.

Q: What conditions can the Microdermabrasion treat?

A: All skin types and color will benefit from this process. Aging, congested, flaky, dry devitalized, thickened, blemished, dull and sun-damaged skin will be rejuvenated and refreshed. Uneven skin tones, blotchiness and textures will be improved. Microdermabrasion will reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, stretch marks, superficial pigmentation, sun damage, enlarged pores, and brown/age spots. Back to top of page.

Q: How long does the procedure take and is there a long recovery period?

A: This procedure is non-invasive and not surgical and takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. The procedure involves no pain or discomfort and there is no "down time". Normal activities can be resumed immediately. Back top of page.

Q: Are there any risks involved with the procedure?

A: There are no risks with this procedure. Afterward, the skin may feel tighter as if exposed to the sun or wind. It may also appear flushed which usually disappears within a few minutes to a few hours. Back to top of page.

Q: How many treatments does a person need before they see results?

A: Microdermabrasion is progressive, not aggressive. Generally, results are realized between 6-14 treatments spaced 1-2 weeks apart. After the first treatment, the skin will appear fresher, cleaner, smoother, and softer for most clients. It is also suggested that the client continue treatments once a month to maintain results. Q: Can a person be too young or too old to experience this treatment?

A: No. But the client should have realistic expectations. They should be in good health and follow an appropriate at-home regimen. A person that is 40 years old will not regain the youthful look of a 20-year-old. Back to top of page.

Q: Are there any precautions to be aware of when Accutane is being used?

A: Under no circumstances is Microdermabrasion to be done on a client's skin when Accutane is being administered. Upon completion of a regimen of Accutane, a minimum of six months is needed before Microdermabrasion begins. Back to top of page.

Q: Are there any precautions to be aware of when using retinols, tretinols, glycolics and a.h.a.'s?

A: The client should stop the use of these products at home 2-3 days before and after each treatment. Also, products that contain acids at higher levels and strengths to affect an immediate peel should be avoided for 7 days before and after treatments. It's important to remember that anything applied after a micro will penetrate deeper and possibly beyond the stratum corneum. Retin A users must wait six weeks before treatments!! Back to top of page.

Q: Can the client put make-up on after treatment?

A: It is not recommended. If possible, the client should wait 8-12 hours before applying a base foundation. Back to top of page.

Q: Is it necessary to apply sun protection after a treatment?

A: Yes - to protect the newly exfoliated skin from harmful rays emitted by the sun. Sunscreen should always be used after treatments for at least three days.

Retin A users must wait six weeks before treatments!!
